- Flowers generally last longest when kept in cool, comfortable conditions.
- Avoid placing your arrangement near heat-producing appliances, air vents, or areas with strong drafts.
Remove fading blooms
- As individual flowers begin to fade or wilt, gently remove them from the arrangement.
- Removing fading blooms helps keep the overall arrangement looking fresh, clean, and beautiful.
Flower food
- Flower food provides nutrients and can help keep cut flowers fresh.
- When using commercial flower food, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- If commercial flower food is unavailable, a simple homemade solution may be prepared using, for 1 quart (approximately 4 cups / 950 mL) of lukewarm water:
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon household bleach
- 2 teaspoons lemon or lime juice
- Mix thoroughly before adding the solution to a clean vase.
- Always use a thoroughly cleaned vase and fresh water when preparing a flower-food solution.
Safety notice
Use only ordinary household bleach and measure carefully. Never mix bleach with ammonia, vinegar, household cleaners, or other chemicals. Keep bleach and the prepared solution away from children and pets, avoid contact with eyes and skin, and do not ingest. This solution is intended only for cut flowers in a vase.
